Two friends laugh hysterically over the different words used in Australia and America

An Australian woman living in the US has shared a hilarious video where she and her “American bestie” compare phrases.

Kira LeMarshall, 21, has been documenting culture clashes she finds strange or amusing since she moved to Hawaii several months ago.

In a recent video, she uploaded pictures of various items and objects - and there is not one occasion where she and her American friend use the same word to describe them.

“I’m Australian, I’m here with my American bestie and we’re gonna compare the names of things,” LeMarshall begins the TikTok video.

After a picture of potato jacks appears, LeMarshall’s friend says “Tater Tots!”

A torch is described by the American as a “flashlight”; chips, of course, as “french fries”; soft drink as “soda”; a fringe as “bangs”; a rubber as an “eraser”; Petrol station as “gas station” and fairy floss as “cotton candy”.

LeMarshall’s friend reacts to the words Australians typically use to describe things with an adorable mix of wonder, shock and incredulity, occasionally trying to repeat the word with an Australian accent.

He cracks up when she describes a man in bathers as wearing “budgie smugglers” (he calls them a “banana hammock”) and guffaws at “fairy floss”.

After a quick outfit change, the comparisons continued.

After saying Australians call a crosswalk a “zebra crossing”, LeMarshall bursts into laughter, realising that she’s just said “zebra” as an American would (zee-bra rather than zeb-ra).

Followers loved the video, with Americans and Australians chipping in with their own hot takes.

“It’s a servo, not a Petrol station,” one Australian noted. “Are you even Aussie???”

“Fairy floss sounds kinky,” one non-Australian noted.

“BANANA HAMMOCK???” exclaims a non-American.

“Do you have a NZ friend who can jump on this with you both?” wondered another.

“More of this, please,” one follower requested.

“This needs to blow up,” noted another. “Love this energy.”

Others were just there for LeMarshall’s friend’s makeup.

“Can we have a moment for the silver eyeliner, it’s incredible,” one follower wrote.

“Your bestie is gorgeous!” said another.

“You’d better not come back with an American accent,” one Aussie wrote.
