Andrade had a successful career in amateur Boxing. The Cape Verdean also started as one of the great favorites to win a medal in the welterweight category, especially after winning the silver medal at the Pan American Games in Rio 2007.

He defeated Keith Thurman to earn the honor of representing the United States at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. He managed to win his first two fights and seemed to be on his way to winning that long-awaited medal, but he was surprised by the South Korean Kim Jung Joo in a controversial loss.
